Will decided to heed the council of our church leaders this spring, and plant a garden. This being his first attempt at growing things in the dirt, he opted to try 'container gardening', which takes up less space than a traditional garden, and should be, in theory, less work. Perfect for one just starting out!
Will and and my brother, Shawn spent several weekends constructing two planter boxes, water sealing them, and sifting through the crappy Cottonwood dirt to remove rocks and clay in order to obtain enough soil for planting.
Will then carefully selected seedlings that would yield fruits and veggies our family might enjoy. He planted his seedlings with great care. He watered them. He weeded around them. He put little stick things next to them to support their tender structures. He kept a watchful eye out for insects, rabbits, and other garden ravishing beasts. Meanwhile, unbeknownst to Will, a more devastating enemy was lurking.
Avery.
aka Garden Wrecker.
Duh duh Dunnnnn.
There are not words to describe the destructive wake our daughter left in the planter boxes when she got her hands in them. She left no plant unturned. The carnage was too graphic to publish. She finished her pillaging, went inside, said to Will, "Sorry I ripped up your 'bamatos', Dad," and strolled away. Poor Will was left to gather his wits and to assess the damage.
The garden was a total loss.
Will brushed away his tears, picked himself up by his bootstraps, and headed to Home Depot. He purchased a new set of seedlings and came home, determined to have his garden. This time around, he stacked the planter boxes on top of each other, with the hope that the higher barrier would keep Avery out. He hastily planted the new seedlings, hoping to get them in the ground before it was too hot. As a family, we formed the Coalition Against the Inhuman Treatment of Garden Variety Shrubbery, and Avery's subsequent attempts at garden wrecking were squelched.
After several weeks, and much vigilance on the part of the C.A.I.T.G.V.S....
And FINALLY...
SUCCESS!!!
Will's first, and so far only, zucchini. Let us hope the garden yields more than just this, or you are looking at the world's most expensive piece of squash!!
And thus ends this chapter in the Trezise Family Garden Saga. But stay turned. Avery's tactics at getting to the garden are getting quite sophisticated. We shall see who enjoys the fruits of their labors. Will or The Garden Wrecker.
